    Film Screening

    Screening & Talk
    "And the Ship Sails on"
Why you must attend this event:
A compelling documentary about the dramatic journey of the German passenger ship SS St. Louis, which in 1939 was turned away from Cuba with 900 Jewish refugees on board and, after a long odyssey, had to return to Germany.

    Documentary 2025 (48 Min)
    English with german subtitles

    Afterwards: Talk with the filmmakers

In May 1939, the SS St. Louis set sail from Hamburg to Cuba with around 900 Jewish refugees on board. Many of the passengers had already survived prisons and concentration camps. However, Cuba, the USA, and Canada denied them entry, and the ship was forced to return to Germany. At the last moment, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands reluctantly accepted the passengers, but after the German occupation of these countries, many of them found themselves in concentration camps once again.
The film features survivors of the St. Louis, sharing their stories. The second half of the film links this history to the October 7, 2023 massacre, where terror and barbarism were once again presented as a "just struggle." Footage from 1939 collides with images of the massacre, showing how the ideals of a civilized world have been turned upside down: victims become the guilty, and murderers are turned into heroes.

A long weekend with Chilly Gonzales

“Finally!” one might exclaim, as Grammy-winning pianist, composer, and entertainer Chilly Gonzales returns to Schloss Elmau for a long weekend. Over two evenings, each with a different program, he will span the spectrum from intimate piano moments from his bestselling "Solo Piano" trilogy to high-energy, sweat-inducing show elements. Gonzales dissects pop songs by famous artists and once again proves his talent as a rapper. Schloss Elmau, for its part, can hardly wait to welcome the entertainer—back in slippers and bathrobe—at the Elmau concert grand.

„American Matrix - Besichtigung einer Epoche“ Gespräch mit Dietmar Müller-Elmau
Warum Sie diese Veranstaltung besuchen sollten:
Was macht Amerika aus?

Igor Levit is considered one of the most innovative and versatile pianists worldwide. The New York Times calls him one of the "most important artists of his generation," while the Süddeutsche Zeitung describes him as a "stroke of luck" for the concert scene. He consistently places his art in the context of societal events, understanding it as inseparably linked to them. As Artist in Residence in 2026, Levit shapes this year's concert program at Schloss Elmau with six piano recitals. For his first double evening, he focuses on selected Beethoven sonatas.

    A Weekend with Michael Wollny

For two concerts, Wollny is now bringing in drummer Alexej Gerassimez for a first encounter and jazz saxophonist Emile Parisien to his side.
