The celebrated composer and pianist fills large stadiums and stages worldwide. With his fascinating soundscapes, which oscillate between minimalist clarity and rushing fullness, he always leaves his audience entranced – whether in the sold-out Royal Albert Hall or on the huge Berlin Waldbühne. The Italian star also comes to Schloss Elmau with great pleasure to work, compose, make music and record CDs. For him, Elmau is, he said, “a paradise” and a “dream place.” What luck to see him in 2023 with 2 concerts at once!

“Der Spiegel” called Ferdinand von Schirach a “great storyteller”, the New York Times an “extraordinary stylist” and the Daily Telegraph described him as “one of the most distinctive voices in European literature”. His books have sold millions of copies, his plays are among the most successful dramas of our time. Now Ferdinand von Schirach can be experienced for the first time with an evening at Schloss Elmau.

    Brad Mehldau piano
Why you must attend this concert:
The great American pianist Brad Mehldau is the benchmark of jazz piano

    LISTEN IN HERE!

"A Star Is Born" was the headline of a major German newspaper in the late 1990s, when Brad Mehldau gave one of his first concerts in Europe. Since then, the versatile and highly creative keyboard-magician has unfolded an unprecedented international career, establishing himself as a bandleader and composer alike. His solo evening in Schloss Elmau will certainly not be a "back to the roots", as the rate at which Brad Mehldau reinvents himself is without equal.

    Shake Stew
Why you must attend this concert:
The award-winning band with energetic beats “brings something cultish to contemporary jazz”. (German Record Critics' Award)

Lukas Kranzelbinder, double bass, e-bass, guembri, bandleader
    Astrid Wiesinger, alto sax
    Johannes Schleiermacher, tenor sax, flute
    Mario Rom, trumpet
    Oliver Potratz, bass
    Niki Dolp, drums, percussion
    Herbert Pirker, drums, percussion

    LISTEN IN HERE!

Brilliant wind instruments make their way through seething rhythms. The drums are doubled, the bass as well. The trumpeter and the two saxophonists jubilate. The rapid playing of the Austrian-German septet is unmistakably located in the here and now. The unspoken magic words are magic and energy. It takes a double album, at least. Shake Stew “brings something cultic to current jazz, an enrichment”. (Evaluation of the jury of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik)

    Media of self-assurance

There are few things more private than a diary. No other form of writing is as subjective, none conveys a similarly fresh impression of what has just been experienced. The history of this special kind of autobiographical writing stretches from antiquity to public Internet blogs. It shows the change in the way humankind sees itself in relation to history.

    Timothy Garton Ash
    “Europa – Eine persönliche Geschichte”
Why you must attend this event:
„Timothy Garton Ash is one of the world's most influential political publicists.“ (Joachim Gärtner, ARD TTT)

    in German

    DETAILS ABOUT THE BOOK

Timothy Garton Ash is a passionate European. Even before 1989, he refused to accept the division of the continent, and he fought against Brexit until the very end. Now he is writing his own personal history of Europe. He tells of friends like Václav Havel, recalls the fall of the Berlin Wall and provides an analysis of recent history. The attack on Ukraine shows how urgently we need a free and united continent – no one embodies this idea more convincingly than Timothy Garton Ash.
