    “Longing for Home”

2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff. He, like many other artists, had to leave his country and take exile in another. Eight concerts and a lecture bring to life this subject, with the voices of these artists as well as the music that they longed for and which shaped them.

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, arr. for two pianos

Chopin left his home in Poland as a young man and never would return. The great second sonata is said to have been inspired by his despair in this separation and his deep love for his country and loved ones. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances was written while he was in exile in the USA, and reflect a deep sense of nostalgia for his beloved Russia. Lily Maisky piano
Why you must attend this concert:
Great cello works by Rachmaninoff, played by one of the world's most famous cellists and his daughter at the piano

Rachmaninow: Mélodie Op 3 No 3, Twilight Op 21 No 3, Vocalise Op 34 No 13, Élégie Op 3 No 1 (arranged for cello and piano)
    Rachmaninoff: Cello sonata

The Russian word “toska” embodies a sense of spiritual longing, yearning and sadness for something or someone that is unattainable. It is a quality that is marked throughout the body of Rachmaninoff’s work. His cello sonata was, along with the famous second piano concerto, one of the first works he wrote after emerging from a particularly acute crisis of confidence. Truly exploiting the tenderness and intense expressive qualities of the cello, with its equally virtuosic and difficult piano part, the sonata is a masterpiece of Romanticism.

Why you must attend this concert:
Fulminant conclusion of the festival week with Tchaikovsky's colossal piano trio

    Tchaikovsky: Piano trio

The colossal trio of Tchaikovsky was dedicated to the memory of his mentor and friend, Nikolai Rubinstein, the founder of the Moscow Conservatory, after his death in 1881. The elegiac character permeates the entire work, taking us from sorrow, along through bittersweet nostalgia of bright memories, and back to an acute and devastating grief. This trio began what would become a tradition of Russian “memorial trios”, notably by Rachmaninoff (who dedicated his to Tchaikovsky), Arensky and Shostakovich.

Which sonatas he has chosen for the concert is not known in advance: for some time now, Schiff has not announced his exact programmes, but only reveals them in the concert. He also explains the works played in the concert and wittily draws attention to the refined details in Haydn's music this evening.

Why you must attend this event:
Song with ancient lyrics on energetic techno beats

texts (in German) by Aischylos, Euripides, Ovid, Sappho, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf et al.

On this evening, the Munich Residenztheater presents the concert version of the theatre evening “Die Unerhörten” (The Unheard): texts and poems by women from ancient mythology are performed in the form of six musical monologues, spoken and sung by actresses of the Residenztheater. They are combined with love songs by Sappho, probably the most important lyricist of antiquity. Together with the live techno band SLATEC, the actresses reflect on the lot of the “unheard” and relate to the political reality of the present.

We follow the inhabitants into their dreams, we sit in the parlors, listen to the conversations in a tavern, peek into the bridal chambers of unmarried girls, learn about the wishes of the blind captain Cat and especially follow the secret lovers up into the milk forest. A unique “prose with blood pressure”, which seems to be bursting with images, onomatopoeia and wordplay.

Why you must attend this concert:
The great American pianist Brad Mehldau is the benchmark of jazz piano

    LISTEN IN HERE!

"A Star Is Born" was the headline of a major German newspaper in the late 1990s, when Brad Mehldau gave one of his first concerts in Europe. Since then, the versatile and highly creative keyboard-magician has unfolded an unprecedented international career, establishing himself as a bandleader and composer alike. His solo evening in Schloss Elmau will certainly not be a "back to the roots", as the rate at which Brad Mehldau reinvents himself is without equal.

    Literature Days “Diaries”
    Media of self-assurance

There are few things more private than a diary. No other form of writing is as subjective, none conveys a similarly fresh impression of what has just been experienced. The history of this special kind of autobiographical writing stretches from antiquity to public Internet blogs. It shows the change in the way humankind sees itself in relation to history.

    Timothy Garton Ash
    “Europa – Eine persönliche Geschichte”
Why you must attend this event:
„Timothy Garton Ash is one of the world's most influential political publicists.“ (Joachim Gärtner, ARD TTT)

    in German

    DETAILS ABOUT THE BOOK

Timothy Garton Ash is a passionate European. Even before 1989, he refused to accept the division of the continent, and he fought against Brexit until the very end. Now he is writing his own personal history of Europe. He tells of friends like Václav Havel, recalls the fall of the Berlin Wall and provides an analysis of recent history. The attack on Ukraine shows how urgently we need a free and united continent – no one embodies this idea more convincingly than Timothy Garton Ash.
