    Music of the Romantic era

    For a whole week, concerts and readings illuminate the fascinating panorama of musical Romanticism: great musical personalities such as Elisabeth Leonskaja and exquisite ensembles such as the Schumann Quartet or german hornsound bring the central themes of Romanticism – nature, the forest and the sound of horns, wanderings and poetry – to life in works by Schubert to Richard Strauss.

    Beethoven: String Quartet No 16 Fmajor, Brahms: Piano Quintet F minor

    The opening of the “Week of the Romantic” will be marked by a first-class formation with a late work by Beethoven at the end of the Viennese Classical period and at the beginning of the musical Romantic period: the Belcea Quartet belongs to the absolute top class of the international string quartet scene. Founded at the Royal College of Music in London, the Belcea Quartet brings together musicians from Romania, Poland and France.Tthe great Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja will join them for Brahms' piano quintet in the second part of the concert.

    C. Schumann: Three Romances
    Fauré: Violin Sonata No 1 A major et al.

    The passionate chamber musician, soloist and festival director Franziska Hölscher and her long-time piano partner, the pianist Severin von Eckardstein, celebrate the romantic composer Clara Schumann's 200th birthday in the “Week of the Romantic”. With works by Janácek and Fauré, the musicians also take a look across the border to the Czech Republic and France, where Gabriel Fauré is paving the way towards a post-romantic, colourful French style.

    She is one of the great pianists of our time and her modesty is almost legendary: As soon as Elisabeth Leonskaja enters a stage – and she has already appeared on all important stages during her career – her great power and passion for music becomes tangible. She can be heard in Schloss Elmau with Chopin and the Symphonic Etudes by Robert Schumann – the epitome of the Romantic composer par excellence.

    Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Mendelssohn: Lieder ohne Worte & works by Strauss

    In his Fantasiestücke Op 12 Robert Schumann follows the literary form coined by E.T.A. Hoffmann and, in various individual scenes, creates imaginative impressions between nocturnal dreams and cheerfully exhilarated mood pictures. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words continue the poetic narrative tone in the lyrical melody of the piano voice. In addition to these masterpieces of Romantic piano literature, there are variations on a Bavarian folk song for string trio (1882), an early work by Richard Strauss, as well as selected songs based on poems by modern contemporaries, whose intimacy and soulfulness have a special effect.

    Helmut Lachenmann in conversation with Alexander Liebreich “Music & Poetry”

    Fireside talk

    Helmut Lachenmann (*1935 in Stuttgart) is one of the most outstanding composers of New Music. Against the backdrop of his engagement with tradition, Lachenmann is looking for an expansion of the concept of music. For the former pupil of Luigi Nono, research into new tonal possibilities and playing techniques is present in all of his compositions. In his opinion, it is a matter of turning every acoustic event into a musical sound and thereby leading the listener to a new listening understanding. His enormously large and versatile oeuvre ranges from music theatre, orchestral and chamber music to vocal music. Works by Helmut Lachenmann belong to the repertoire of renowned opera houses, festivals, orchestras and ensembles.

    Strauss: Violin Sonata E flat major, Bach & Pärt

    The young violinist Arabella Steinbacher and her piano partner Robert Kulek were inspired to put together an exciting programme. The two Bach sonatas BWV 1019 and BWV 1020 (today mostly attributed to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach) exude late Baroque elegance and sensitive melody. They contrast effectively with the only violin sonata in E-flat major (1887/88) by the 23-year-old Richard Strauss – a stormy test of talent that points to later symphonic poems and even the Rosenkavalier. Arvo Pärt is the most famous Estonian composer. His works are written for renowned orchestras and musicians. Fratres is the result of Pärt's preoccupation with medieval music: beginning with an archaic sound, the composition finally finds peaceful and spiritual peace.

    Schumann's Dichterliebe and Lieder by Schubert between classical and folk

    Nobody can escape the pull of this music: A young and energetic quartet has the courage to translate texts by Goethe or Heine into the best English and finally to arrange Schubert's and Schumann's piano part for tuba, cello and guitar. The result is surprising: Schubert and Schumann in a new guise present themselves poetically and melancholically, brilliantly and wittily. Whether in Vienna or London, young or old, classical fan or pop groupie: the 200-year-old songs touch the mind. Schubert and Schumann themselves would have enjoyed it.

    The young South African soprano Golda Schultz began her career in the opera studio of the Bavarian State Opera, where she quickly became a celebrated singer. Now she is a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

    Forest, hunting, male singing and the sound of the horn are not to be excluded from German Romanticism. The award-winning gentlemen from “German hornsound” and “amarcord” present works for male voices and horn quartet, including Schubert's famous song “Nachtgesang im Walde” from the heart chamber of German Romanticism, always with a pinch of irony.

    Brahms: Clarinet Quintet et al.

    Clarinettist Pablo Barragán and the Schumann Quartet have taken on a work with the “sadly beautiful sound of the Fin de siècle” for their concert during the “Week of the Romantic”. On the penultimate evening of the festival, the five musicians will illuminate a work of the late 19th century from Brahms' final creative phase.

    Schumann: Dichterliebe & settings of Heine poems by Loewe , Liszt, Wolf et al.

    In this programme, baritone Samuel Hasselhorn, winner of the song competition initiated by Thomas Quasthoff in Heidelberg, and his piano partner Boris Kusnezow present the cycle “Dichterliebe” (Poetry Love) based on texts by Heinrich Heine twice: first the usual cycle by Robert Schumann, and then a second cycle composed by ten different composers with settings by Loewe via Mendelssohn, Liszt, Grieg, Ives, Wolf and Mussorgsky.

    In the movie “Geliebte Clara” Martina Gedeck plays the wife of Robert Schumann. Together with Stefan Kurz and the duo Schneider-Imorde, she now presents a “Homage to Robert Schumann” to bring the “Week of the Romantic” to a close. In a knowledgeable collage of letters and musical pieces by and about the composer, they create a tragic and moving insight into the inner world of the most important romantic composer and his epoch.

    Since 1998 Schloss Elmau has played host to over 2000 jazz concerts from the hottest international artists, establishing it as a key venue on the jazz circuit. Jazz greats like Michael Wollny, Thomas Quasthoff and Nils Landgren and other top acts have been announced for this year's festival.

    Zum Auftakt des 21. European Jazztival feiert Thomas Quasthoff seinen 60. Geburrtstag: der Bassbariton hat sich nach einer großen klassischen Opern- und Liedkarriere nocheinmal neu erfunden und ist nun weit über die Klassik-Grenzen als Jazzsänger und Rezitator bekannt. „Meine Wiedererkennbarkeit liegt ja auch bei rund 100 Prozent“, sagt er über sich selbst. Seine Geburtstagsfeier mit langjährigen musikalischen Freunden ist prominent besetzt und verspricht einen großartigen Start des diesjährigen Jazz-Festivals.
