    Science Lab

Workshop for kids for Kids ages 6-11 from 10am-11.30am
    with Ulrike Albrecht & team

The Science Lab educational institution is visiting Schloss Elmau again, offering a research program for preschool- and elementary school-age children. The children are called on to join the science lab instructors in exploring exciting phenomena of nature, technology and the environment.
Discovering and understanding the world with all their senses is our children’s recipe for success. They notice things that have become humdrum for adults: raindrops hanging on branches, a compass showing the direction, lightning splitting the sky, followed by thunder. Because children want to understand all this, they often bombard us with questions.
In the Science Lab experimentation courses, experienced science lab instructors are ready to be bombarded. They then help the kids postulate hypotheses, which the young researchers then independently check using simple but ingenious experiments. The workshop leaders guide them in the process, asking specific questions to lead them towards finding the answers for themselves. This lets the children directly integrate what they’ve experienced into their world of knowledge, and on top of that benefit from the fact that they found out the explanation for themselves. Apart from the fun and joy that all children have in the process, they quite incidentally acquire the tools for an analytical approach to questions on their journey through life.

HANDS ON WOOD - wood workshop

Workshop for kids & teens ages 6 and up from 10am-1pm
    with Alexandra Syrbe

In this woodworking workshop, you will construct and build anything from doll houses to towers, board games, steerable and illuminated cars. Or you can put your own, entirely unique, ideas and inventions into practice as you work alongside other boys and girls. You will handle saws, hammers, files, and other woodworking tools. Once you’ve earned your workshop “driver’s license,” you can let your imagination run wild and build whatever you like. From well-lit bird houses to mobile mailboxes and flying cars – you decide what you want to take home with you from the wood workshop. Alexandra Syrbe, a Design and Visual Communications technician and studio & workshop teacher, has been very successful in Germany and abroad for almost 10 years with her company “technics on the move.” She has already inspired many kids through a variety of workshop formats (wood, UMT, lathing, stamping and photo workshop, the “So-oder-So” bookbindery, and others).

    Chess Academy

Workshop for kids and teens ages 6 and up from 10am-1pm
    with Dijana and Peter Dengler

Chess is a good way to have fun while developing important skills that are of key relevance in our modern world. It takes good concentration skills to cope with the overstimulation and vast diversity of information we encounter daily. In addition to strategic thinking and planning, chess systematically promotes imagination and combinatorial analysis.

COURSE I This beginner’s course lays the foundation for all further chess skills development. It starts with a look at the fascinating origins of chess. Later we get to know the powers and importance of the individual figures in detail. Fundamental thinking strategies are explained and tried out in connection with some easy chess exercises. Even here, we already encounter important ideas as ‘zugzwang’ or double attack in a simple form. Overall, this course provides a complete introduction to the rules, and towards the end, basic opening moves.
COURSE II Beyond the specific content, this course provides a guideline for thinking in a “chess” way, which can be a good signpost during the initially bewildering multifariousness of the game. Asking ourselves a series of standard questions makes it easier to find good solutions. The focus is firmly on chess tactics; all the basic motifs are treated, from capture to blocking and unblocking to typical checking motifs. Towards the end of the course we return to matters of the opening and the endgame, where tactical and strategic ideas go hand in hand. Participation in this course requires a sound knowledge of the rules of chess and some basic concepts.
COURSE III Given sufficient demand we also offer an advanced program for seasoned players. The coaches will assess the skill level on site. Focuses of this course include chess strategy, an initial repertoire of openings, and playing practice under tutelage.
